Abstract

No matter where we are and what we are doing, steel is always present in our lives, at work or in our leisure time, sometimes even as a work of art. Steel is indispensable, recyclable and has a very special significance: In our modern industrial society, steel is the basic material for all important industrial sectors, such as automotive and shipbuilding, apparatus and mechanical engineering, bridge and structural steel engineering, energy and environmental technology, the packaging industry, the household and sports industry, medical technology, hydraulics and pneumatics, and many more. Today, the large-scale production and processing of steel is state of the art and the variety of steels developed is impressive. This world of steel is constantly evolving and has become astonishingly diverse, indeed so complex that it is not easy to keep track of in practice. The aim is to give the reader an understanding of this world, not in a highly scientific way, but in a technically correct and easily understandable way: from steel production, ingot and continuous casting, forming and mechanical processing to finishing, testing and packaging of the products, the processes and equipment predominantly used throughout, including the environmentally compatible recycling and disposal of waste. Interesting applications will also be highlighted. The target groups Students, practitioners, engineers and anyone interested in the history of technology. The content Systematization of materials - The material steel - Alloying elements and steel properties - Steel production - Forming - Heat treatment of steel - Materials testing - Production engineering processes - Finishing - By-products and waste - Steel in everyday life - Steel in the future - Chronological table on iron and steel - Glossary The author Dr.-Ing. Joachim Schlegel: Steel shaped his professional life as a mechanical engineer, rolling mill operator, researcher, salesman, product manager, customer consultant and lecturer (continuing education).

Abstract

This book comprises the proceedings of the conference “Future Automotive Production 2022”, which took place in Wolfsburg. The conference focused on hybrid lightweight design, which is characterized by the combination of different materials with the aim of improving properties and reducing weight. In particular, production technologies for hybrid lightweight design were discussed, new evaluation methods for the ecological assessment of hybrid components were presented and future-oriented approaches motivated by nature for the development of components, assemblies and systems were introduced. Lightweight design is a key technology for the development of sustainable and resource-efficient mobility concepts. Vehicle manufacturers operate in an area of conflict between customer requirements, competition and legislation. Material hybrid structures, which combine the advantages of different materials, have a high potential for reducing weight, while simultaneously expanding component functionality. The future, efficient use of function-integrated hybrid structures in vehicle design requires innovations and constant developments in vehicle and production technology. There is a great demand, especially with regard to new methods and technologies, for "affordable" lightweight construction in large-scale production, taking into account the increasing requirements with regard to variant diversity, safety and quality. The Editors Prof. Dr.-Ing. Klaus Dröder is Professor of Manufacturing Technologies and Process Automation, as well as Head of the Institute for Machine Tools and Production Technology (IWF) at the Technische Universtität Braunschweig. He is also a member of the board of the Open Hybrid LabFactory. His research interests include technological and automation issues in current and future process chains, with a focus on the implementation of production strategies that enable the efficient and flexible manufacture of functionalized products. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Vietor is Head of the Institute for Engineering Design (IK) at the Technische Universität Braunschweig as well as a member of the board of the Open Hybrid LabFactory. His research focuses on the integration of product development and production technology, the integration of product development and industrial design, and the use and further improvement of CAx processes in product development.

Abstract

This book describes the application of mathematical and fundamental theory as stated in the relevant standards, namely EYM and NDS. Timber is one of the important building materials in the field of engineering, other than concrete and steel. However, there is still a lot of unexplored knowledge about timber, including how timber connections are made. One of the main types of timber connection is mortise and tenon. Mortise and tenon are widely seen as one of the most important traditional timber structural joint. In order to understand the load-carrying capacity and performance of the structural mortise and tenon joint, the existing theoretical background of timber joint design is made as a reference. Current equations applicable in estimating the load-carrying capacity of timber joint uses the European Yield Model (EYM). Therefore, the main aim of this book is to share the basic design knowledge, inclusive of safety factor limitations (as engineering main factor) in structural design.

Abstract

This book offers a comprehensive overview of the use of bamboo in the building industry. It systematically demonstrates bamboo’s utility in terms of its properties, describing the material properties of typical industrial bamboo products, and discussing their performance evaluation and optimization as building components and in the creation of building envelopes. The book presents the recent developments regarding the innovative ways to design and represent architecture through parametric survey tools, and describes the experimental geometrical-generative design process of a connection joint for free-form lightweight structures employing beams made of bamboo culms. It examines algorithmic-generative design themes, through processes of optimization, analysis, and geometrical-spatial verification, employing the potential of digital form-finding design and digital manufacturing techniques to validate the defined technological solution. This book appeals to scientists and professionals and is a valuable resource for civil engineers, designers and students interested in this unique plant material and its application in the building industry.
